The following is our latest schedule of Maui Watercolorists Association Events. This will include workshops, demonstrations, art exhibits, plein air and membership meetings. Our group is open to all Maui Watercolorists on Maui. "Schedule Changes": Please "double check" the times and dates posted below of events you are planning to attend to confirm. Some of them may have changed.

Sunday November 6 (10:30 am - 1:30 pm)
"MWA Members only Meeting" We will discuss volunteer jobs and invite members to take a more active role in MWA. Our meeting will be followed by a "Painting Outdoors" demonstration by Jim Kingwell. We will paint outdoor scenery. trees, plants the church, etc... on the porch at the Maui Bridge Center in Kihei.
Jim owns his own art gallery in Lahaina and is well known for his lively, colorful uplifting landscapes and island art that displays much talent and skill. He is a popular MWA teacher and steadfast supporter of MWA. "Potluck Luncheon" (1:30 pm / clean-up: 2 pm) bring a creative healthy dish to share. (suggestions fruit or vegetable salads)

"Painting with Phil Sabado" at the Maui Bridge Center in Kihei. Phil is a beloved Maui Painter with a strong passion for Hawaiiana subjects with historical meaning. (please bring your own art supplies) "Potluck Luncheon" (4 pm / clean-up: 4:30 pm) bring a creative healthy dish to share. (suggestions fruit or vegetable salads)

Sunday December 6 (10:30am - 2 pm)
"Painting Within Your Temple" A very special workshop, with World Peace Artist, "Andrea Smith". A special and unique opportunity to paint at Andrea's outdoor studio, located at her home amidst a sculpture garden of treasures collected from places that inspire her art, from Egypt to Borneo. This is a very special opportunity for a select group of participants to paint in an intimate setting, in nature with world renoun artist Andrea Smith.
Andrea has strictly been an outdoor painter for over 25 years, and has always painted within nature. Participants will have the opportunity to focus on specific sculptures, and the nature of the garden. Andrea is a painter that puts feelings on the paper, and this is what she will emphasize during this adventure in Plein Air watercolor. She will share her techniques and all participants will be able to view her art and how it has transcended over a 40 Year period. Materials needed will include anything that one would use to create a watercolor painting. Brushes, Paint and Paper. Flat painting surface areas will be provided to paint on.

"PRE-REGISTERATION IS REQUIRED": Registration is limited to the first 12 participants who register on a first come basis. No registrations will be accepted at the door. Andrea is generously donating her time to help in the creation of the new "MWA Art Gallery". All proceeds will go to the "MWA Art Gallery Fund".

Maui Watercolorists Association Art Gallery invitation to all current and prospective new members.

The "Maui Watercolorists Association Art Gallery" is about to become a dream come true! Those who wish to have their art featured in the new "MWA Art Gallery" are invited to help address and seal envelopes to be sent to the 500 neighbors surrounding our new Art Gallery location which will invite them to the County hearing which is tentatively scheduled for September 27th, 2005.
You may qualify to have your art featured in the new "MWA Art Gallery" by becoming an MWA volunteer on a committee. Once the new Art Gallery opens, all artists who are selected to have their art displayed in the gallery will have the opportunity to serve as an Art Gallery sales representatives for one full day a month. Would you like to be a part of the historical and exciting new "MWA Art Gallery..?" Please review and select your choice from the following volunteer positions available on a first come basis:

MWA Art Gallery Auction "Fund Raiser Committee"

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR "MWA ART GALLERY FUNDRAISERS" Anyone who wishes to take an active part in MWA Art shows must be a current MWA member and must volunteer. SIGN UP NOW..! Once our MWA Art Gallery opens, artists who qualify will earn a place to show and market their artwork in the gallery. Help MWA serve the local art community and volunteer today won't you..?

OTHER WAYS YOU CAN HELP:

  • donate money for the art gallery
  • donate artwork to the art auction fundraiser
  • participate in the fundraiser
  • be part of team to organize art contributions for the fundraiser
  • be on mailing out committee
  • be on phone committee
  • do online work to help create flyers and email membership info
    NOTE: If you are an MWA member and do not contact us regarding one of the volunteer positions available, we must assume you will not be participating in the formation, opening and Art Show presentations of the new MWA Art Gallery.

    ABOUT THE NEW MWA ART GALLERY & AUCTION:

    STEP ONE: Our original quotation to mail out the certified letter to residents was not accurate. Instead of a $500. cost we have been informed by USPS that it will be closer to $1900. to complete the mailing. Because of this change our meeting to address the envelopes scheduled on August 20th was postponed till more funds are raised. In order to do this we are forming the "Fund Raiser Committee" to support the "MWA Art Gallery Auction" and other activities so we can raise the $1900. needed for the certified letter mailing. Note: The "Envelope Addressing Committee" will be notified when adequate funds have been raised to complete the certified mailing.

    STEP TWO: As prescribed by the Maui Planning Dept. we must obtain all 500 addresses of residents who are within a 500 sq. foot circumference of the MWA Art Gallery's location at 989 So Kihei Rd. and mail them a certified letter of the Maui Planning Dept's hearing to be held in September-October of 2005.

    STEP THREE: The "MWA Art Gallery Auction" will require 8-12 volunteers. We're extending a special invitation to all MWA members and especially those artists who have been featured in either the recent "Avalene Gallery Show" or "Ano Ano Show" to volunteer their time or artwork and become an integral part of this exciting and historical event. please volunteer today. Note: Art Shows at the new "MWA Art Gallery" in Kihei will be held each month once approval is received by the Planning Dept. (months and dates of Shows to be announced in future MWA Newsletters)

    Our new exhibition location will most likely once again be at "THE AVALENE GALLERY" which is located in Makawao where we hosted our most recent and successful art show. MWA is grateful to our friends and the owners of "The Avalene Gallery" for accommodating us once again. (month, date and confirmation of Art Show to be announced in the October or November Newsletters)
    IMPORTANT NOTE: As a new bylaw of MWA, members who wish to participate in our future art shows will be required by appointment to volunteer for a job or role on the exhibition committee.

    The opening of our MWA Juried Spring Member's Only Art Exhibition "Wainanuenue" (translation: "Rainbow in Water") held at the "Avalene Gallery" has been a wonderful success thanks to all the talented artists and beautiful art work of MWA members. This show is currently on view at Avalene Gallery through May 21st. Although all the entries to this show could not be selected to appear, our three show jurors agree that our entries showed great artistic talent and skill. The award ceremony took place on May 7 at the Art Reception with awards presented by Kathy Kasprzycki and founder/president of MWA, Barbara Steinberg-Orlowski. The three jurors Daniel Merriam, Steven Lee Smeltzer, and Shavonn Eason were also present for the artists to meet. All were very grateful to these fine jurors who helped to make this a most excellent exhibition.

    Twenty artists out of the thirty-two who entered were accepted into this show. Twenty-six paintings out of sixty-nine paintings were selected to show. Nine awards of excellence were given. The award winning artists were as follows:
