WHY DO WE CELEBRATE ALL SAINTS DAY ?
transport back to
all saints day tributes directory links index

The eve of "All Saints Day" is known as All Hallows Eve, or Halloween. Halloween is the eve of Hallowmas, better known to contemporary Christians as "All Saints Day" officially celebrated on November 1st. Hallowmas the evening of October 31st, begins the celebration of God's harvesting into heaven the faithful of every age, culture and walk of life. It is traditionally a day of glorious rejoicing and the celebrating of all saints, known and unknown.

WHO ARE THE SAINTS..?
transport back to
all saints day tributes directory links index

Saints are people who, by their joyful service, have extended the love of God to others. The list of the saints officially honored by the church, contains over 10,000 names and those are only the saints we know of. "All Saints Day" also remembers those holy people whom no one but God any longer knows. The reading of this day from Revelation describes "A great multitude that no one can count..." This abundant harvest of souls is perfectly suited to observance in late autumn. This is why "All Saints Day" and Halloween are brightened with corn stocks, pumpkins, apples, nuts and other signs of nature's bounty.

ORIGINS OF ALL SAINTS DAY

all saints day tributes directory links index

Christians have been honoring their Saints and Martyrs since at least the second century AD. The Martyrdom of Polycarp, written near the middle of the second century, attests to this historical fact. Initially the calendars of Saints and Martyrs churches honored their own local saints, however gradually feast days became more accepted and universal. The first reference to a general feasts "Celebrating All Saints" occurs in St Ephrem the Syrian AD 373 and St. John Chrysostom AD 407 and are assigned as a day to the feast, and in the Eastern Churches the feast is celebrated to this day. In the West, this celebration feast date was eventually moved to May with the current day observance taking place on November 1st originating from the time of Pope
Gregory III. AD 741
In the celebration of the Saints we are petitoned to acknowledge the presence of the Saints and ask them to pray for us in the memory of our dearly departed Souls leading to their continued care in the Communion of Saints. Every evening prayers are said for the beloved souls while blessed candles burn out of respect and honor for the holy souls.

ALL SAINTS DAY HISTORY
The challenge of sainthood is to go wherever Love takes me...

all saints day tributes directory links index

The American tradition of Halloween's ghost and goblin madness comes from Celtic lands, where the spirits of the dead were believed to roam the earth for one night before winter began. In an attempt to ward off their fears of the supernatural, people sat around huge bonfires, telling stoires and sharing the fruits of the harvest. This is the lineage which has led to the commercialization of costumes, ghosts, and trick or treating. However this Hallowed eve is more than just dressing up and getting candy.
For many Central and Latin Americans, this holy day is celebrated as the "Day of the Dead", or Dia de Muertos and is a "Celebration of Life..." This tradition is still honored with a party where everyone brings food and desserts to the cemetery as a way to remind people of life after death. The families of the dead prepare the favorite meals of the dearly departed and make a special bread to bring to the cemetery. This special bread is configured in the shape of little people and used with other offerings to remind the participants that they and their memories of the departed are alive..." The Day of the Dead celebration is a totally different way to look at Halloween and explains why skulls and skeletons are seen today although the original celebration had nothing to do with fear and horror.
Halloween also evolved from the Druid belief that on the eve of November 1st demons, witches, and evil spirits roamed the earth to greet the arrival of the winter season, with it's long nights and early darkness. They were beleived to have fun frightening and playing tricks on humans. The only way humans could escape this torment would be to offer food and sweets to these demons, or try to escape by disguising themselves as one of the creatures and joining the festivities.
The Christian feast of "All Hallows Eve," does not celebrate Halloween, but rather "All Saints Day" and "All Souls Day..." For Roman Catholics, "All Saints Day", is a holy day of obligation. Just as in the Day of the Dead celebration, the devoted in many countries including the USA visit the graves of family, relatives and friends on the morning or afternoon of "All Saints Day." During this Holyday we are petitoned to acknowledge the presence of the saints and ask them to pray for us in the memory of our dearly departed Souls leading to their continued care in the Communion of Saints. The Roman Catholic church devotes the eight days after "All Saints Day" to special prayer. This 8-day period is called Soul Nights, or Seelennachte. Every evening prayers are said for the beloved souls while blessed candles burn out of respect and honor for the holy souls.

PRAYERS TO THE SAINTS
transport back to
all saints day tributes directory links index

As mentioned, Halloween (All Hallows Eve) is the Eve of All Saints Day, therefore "All Saints Day Prayers" are most appropriate for this feast celebrating the Saints. Since Halloween has a history of mischief making, these All Saints Day Prayers are focused on calling forth the sacred and for good to conquer the profane and evil. These All Saints Day Prayers are Christian, Catholic and Orthodox in origin.
"I invite each of you to join me in the following Prayer and Contemplation during this most Sacred of Seasons..."
Prayer to be Delivered from all Evil
adapted from the Liturgy of Saint James

Sanctify, O Lord,
our souls, minds, and bodies.
Touch our minds
and search out our consciences.
Cast out from us every evil thought,
Every impure idea,
every base desire and memory,
Every unseemly word,
all envy, pride and hypocrisy,
Every lie, every deceit,
every worldly temptation,
All greed, all vainglory,
all wickedness, all wrath,
All anger, all malice,
all blasphemy, and all sloth,
Every movement of flesh and spirit
That is alien to the will of your holiness.
And enable us to turn to You,
Master, Lord who loves humankind,
To call upon you
with boldness and without condemnation,
With a pure heart, a contrite soul,
a face unashamed,
and with lips that are sanctified

Prayer to God for our Protection

O merciful and mighty God,
Your Son Jesus Christ
was born of the Blessed Virgin Mary
to bring us salvation
and to establish Your kingdom on earth.
Grant that Michael and all Your angels
may defend Your people
against Satan and every evil foe,
and that at last
we may come to that heavenly country
where Your saints forever sing Your praise.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

All Saints Eve Prayer
adapted from the Liturgy of the Hours

Father,
All-Powerful and Ever-Living God,
Today we rejoice in the holy men and women
of every time and place
May their prayers bring us your forgiveness and love
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty and Everlasting God,
who dost enkindle the flame of Thy love
in the hearts of the saints,
grant unto us the same faith and power of love;
that, as we rejoice in their triumphs
we may profit by their examples,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

A Catholic Prayer in Praise of the Saints
Unknown author, 10th century
transport back to
all saints day tributes directory links index

How shining and splendid are your gifts, O Lord
which you give us for our eternal well-being
Your glory shines radiantly in your saints, O God
In the honour and noble victory of the martyrs.
The white-robed company follow you,
bright with their abundant faith;
They scorned the wicked words
of those with this world's power.
For you they sustained
fierce beatings, chains, and torments,
they were drained by cruel punishments.
They bore their holy witness to you
who were grounded deep within their hearts;
they were sustained by patience and constancy.
Endowed with your everlasting grace,
may we rejoice forever
with the martyrs in our bright fatherland.
O Christ, in your goodness,
grant to us the gracious heavenly realms of eternal life.
