Don't believe anyone would dispute that last year was quite the year for changes... Personally I'm more than ready to greet the New Year and everything that it represents in terms of letting go to embrace new beginnings and a fresh new start on life and lifetyle. On New Year's Eve, many will partake in celebrations that will greet the New Year at midnight and celebrate the first minutes of the year in the company of friends and family. I enjoy this ritual as well but in recent years have'nt ventured out to as many parties so as to avoid the alcoholic drinking-driving phenomena as well as the police road-blocks and randomly ignited fireworks and homemade aerial rockets.
My most memorable New Year's celebration was in 2000 when my beloved family came out from the West Coast to celebrate Christmas and the new Millennium here in the Hawaiian Islands with me. Don't think I'll ever be able to top that one in terms of shear joy, loving hugs and the creation of everlasting memories with the geography of paradise all about us. I expect this year to be toasting to friends and family at home with my True Love by my side here on the north shore of Oahu. I'm sure as tradition has marked it that we'll watch "Dick Clark's Rockin' New Years Eve" as the ball drops to the countdown of the New Year in New York's TimesSquare. Then I'll sleep for a few hours and get up at around 5 in the morning to watch the New Year Day Parades on TV. One of my favorite New Year memories was being the percussion (drums) section leader in my High School's Marching Band and being selected to perform in the prestigious "Pasadena Rose Parade" on New Year's Day, then getting to sit in the stands to watch the Rose Bowl football game. I think that one of my very favorite things about the holidays is recalling such beautiful memories as well as making some new ones each and every year...
Our special New Years Day presentation is entitled: "New Year, New Beginnings" and will offer a brief overview of New Year Traditions and Customs for this holiday's celebration as well as a sharing of some of the most "Common New Year Resolutions" followed by the "Top 10 New Years Resolutions" for this year. Of course I'll include some helpful suggestions on how to keep you're New Years Resolutions past the month of January.
I wish each of you safe journeys and many wonderful present and future memories in the coming New Year...

"Celebrating New Years Day in Hawaii"... What could ever be better than opening your eyes to paradise and watching all the natural beauty beckoning in the New Year. Even if it be late December or early January, Hawaii is still warmer and more tropically beautiful than most anywhere else in the entire world. Depending on which Island you chose to visit, you will find a multiplicity of options for anyway you desire to celebrate your coming New Year blessings. If your fortunate enough to plan a visit for the New Year or anytime of the year, here are a few suggestions to prepare you for the most memorable journey of a lifetime.
01- Plan Ahead
Hawaii is a Tourist destination and as such, can be a bit pricey so it does pay to do a little research as you plan your trip to Paradise. Hawaii Hotels can fill up quickly, especially over any of the holidays so plan ahead by 2 to 4 months if possible. Look for Fly-Drive-Hotel package trips. Theyre usually the best deals. Once you're in the Hawaiian Islands remember, most stores have local and tourist prices for items. Generally the further away to travel from the high tourist attractions (primarily around and at the beaches) the less expensive things are. A rental car is a pretty essential item if you want to really be free to see all the beauty the Hawaiian islands have to offer.
Note: For retired or active Military, Oahu has private Military Beaches available with camping and lodging on base at discounted rates.
02- Enjoy the Beach and Respect the Ocean
If you are planning a trip to Hawaii for the New Year or anytime during the bonafide Hawaiian Winter months of October through February, keep in mind that although the weather is usually always comfortable this is the "Bigger Surf" time of the year. Ocean swells can range from 7-feet to 40-feet especially on the North Shores of each of the Hawaiian Islands. This means that as you arrive at anyone of the beaches look to see if Lifeguards are posted on that beach. Then watch the ocean swells for about 5-minutes or so. It's not uncommon for a moderate swell a couple of feet high to be quickly followed by a 10-15 foot swell so don't just jump in the water when you get to that beach. Respect the Ocean and you'll have the time of your life.
03- Hawaii Visitor Destinations
There are six primary islands with active visitor destinations in the Hawaiian Island Chain. They are; Oahu, Maui, Kauai, the Big Island, Molokai, and Lanai. The following presentation lists many of the most popular Travel destinations for visitors to Hawaii with a breif descriptive critique of each of the Hawaiian islands.

Maui will be a bit more mellow than Oahu but still has plenty of wonderful Visitor Destinations including "Iao Valley", "Haleakala National Park", located on the dormant "Haleakala Volcano" which rises 10,000 feet above sea level. The island of Maui is also well known for it's beautiful beach destinations many of which are fronted by international 5-star class Hotels and Condominium complexes. Maui features numerous sweeping swimming beaches all along it's coastline and world class manicured golf courses. The local charm of Maui's valleys and historical ports such as the one located in the old Whaling town of Lahaina also renowned for its excellent whale watching tours give the island of Maui that hidden magic and tresure that so many have already found there.
The Big Island of Hawaii is by far and wide the biggest of all the Hawaiian islands. It's been said that the entire land masses of the rest of the Hawaiian islands could fit inside the boundaries of the Big Islands geographical expanse. The Big Island is home to about 140,000 people yet over a million tourists visit the island each year. From The Big Island's awesome Tropical Jungles to it's Moon like frozen magma terrains, to the Snow capped Mountains and actively erupting Lava flowing Volcanoes, The Big Island of Hawaii many exciting destinations coupled with it's laid back lifestyle make it a vacation spot of a lifetime.
Big Island Favorite Attractions and Activites include;
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
The Kilauea Volcano
The Kona Coast scuba diving and game fishing
The Old Coffee Plantation
The Kohala Coast world famous golf courses
Kauai also known as "The Garden Isle", is even more low key than the island of Maui featuring some of the most beutiful and photographed Beaches and breathtaking Mountain coastal scenery in the world. Kauai is home to some of the rarest and exotic flora and fauna known to man and it's "Kokee State Park" is home to the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific". Taking one of the many helicopter tours through this Baby Grand Canyon will make for an unforgettable lifetime memory. Waterfalls are abundant especially by the Waialua River where you can take a ferryboat ride and be serenated by live Hawaiian Musicians on the old style. With great hiking trails, kayaking, zodiac and abundant watersport tours, Kauai is the perfect destination for those who love the great outdoors and paradisicle splendor of relative or toal privacy.
Molokai is truly the penn ultimate island to escape any indication of commercial tourist and infrastructure. "Molokai", northwest of Oahu, is the home of the world's highest sea cliffs and it's quite easy to find trails to take a hike well off the beaten path. Their world famous Mule rides make for a truly unique experience. Molokai is also the birthplace of the ancient Hawaiian Dance called "Hula" and there are numerous Hula shows islandwide.
Lanai is even more reclusive than the island of Molokai. While their beaches and untamed geography may not be as scenic as many of the other Hawaiian Islands, Lanai's local charm and friendly people are prevelent everywhere you go. The marine conservation area located in Hulopoe Bay will transport the visitor to the Hawaii of ancient days, with it's serene beaches and ultra layed back atmosphere.

AMERICAN NEW YEARS DAY TRADITIONS

New Years Day is traditionaly celebrated the first day of each year, on January 1st. It is a celebration of the old year and the new one to come. "American New Years Day traditions" include making New Years Resolutions which they promise themselves to keep and fulfill through the coming new year.
New Years Eve is also a major social event. Local restaurants and clubs are packed with party makers who stay out all night and then go wild at exactly midnight. Another long standing "American New Years Eve tradition" is to watch the New Years Ball dropped in Times Square located in New York City as it counts down the final moments of the old year and ignites the large crowds as it touches down to proclaim the official New Year has begun at precisely 12 oclock midnight. This event is telecast throughout the world and can be viewed by all on television.
The entire range of celebrations on New Year's Day basically stems from the numerous ways ancient societies greeted the new harvest seasons. In fact, it has been the number of fruit or grain crop harvests that have determined how the New Year would be celebrated. Of course if the crop harvest was favorable then there was Jubilation and Celebration for a bountiful New Year. These early customs throughout the years became associated with the celebration of the New Year. In ancient societies throughout the world, New Year festivities had been observed in the forests and plains by the native cultures. To the American Indians the ripening of the corn in July or August signified the termination of one year and the beginning of another. It was their customs to drape themselves with new clothes and replace old interiors of their domiciles with something new. The native Indian Iroquois tribe inaugurated the New Year in January, February and even March with ceremonies expelling evil spirits for a more favorable life. Their customs of wearing masks, making noises and general festivities were all practiced by them and can be seen reflected in the current day celebrations of New Years eve and day.

It was the Dutch, in their New Amsterdam settlement in the mid 17th century, who originated our more modern day American New Years Day traditions and celebrations. New Year's Day was the most important holiday for the Dutch people who have been noted throughout the centuries for their love of beer, wine and celebration. The ancient tradition of making deafening noise is to drive away evil spirits who attached themselves to the living during the climactic seasons was practiced by the wailing of horns, shouting and the beating of drums. Sound familiar..?
Symbolically, New Year signifies the renewal of life, the spirit of celebration for regenerating the new while discarding the old. These customs and practices have evolved throughout the centuries but their core meanings are still with our customs and traditions for celebrating New Years to this very day...

HISTORY OF NEW YEARS RESOLUTION
Transliterated by: "Michael AngelOh"

The tradition and history of the New Years Resolution extends all the way back to the year 153 B.C. "Janus, a mythical god of early Rome" was placed at the head of the calendar. With two faces, Janus could look back on past events and also forward to the future. The Romans named the first month of the year "January" after "Janus", as he was the god of new beginnings and the guardian of doors and entrances. At midnight on December 31st, the Romans imagined Janus looking back upon the old year and forward onto the new. Janus became the ancient symbol for resolutions and many Romans looked to forgiveness from their enemies and also exchanged gifts before the beginning of each new year. The Romans began the tradition of exchanging gifts on New Year's Eve by giving one another branches from sacred trees for good fortune. Later, this practice evolved into the giving of nuts or coins imprinted with the god Janus upon them which became the most common New Year's gift of the day.
The celebration of the New Year is the most ancient of all holidays. It was first observed in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. In the years around 2000 BC, Babylonians celebrated the beginning of a new year on what is now March 23, although they themselves had no written calendar. January 1st became the official beginning of the New Year in 46 B.C., when the then Emporer of Rome, Julius Caesar developed a calendar that would more accurately reflect the passing of seasons than the previous calendars had been able to mark. It was during the Middle Ages that Christians changed New Years Day to December 25th, the birthdate of Jesus Christ. It was then changed to March 25th, a holiday called the Annunciation, the day when Mary received the revelation from an Angel that she would become the Mother of Jesus Christ. In the sixteenth century, Pope Gregory XIII revised the Julian calendar, and the celebration of the New Year was returned to January 1st.
New Years Day is not always celebrated on January 1st by all cultures. New Years is celebrated by some cultures including the Jewish and Chinese peoples on their own selected dates of the year. The Julian and Gregorian calendars are Solar calendars. Some cultures have Lunar calendars. A year in a Lunar calendar is less than 365 days because the months are based on the various phases of the Moon. The Chinese use the Lunar calendar and so their New Year begins at the time of the first full Moon positioned over the Far East after the Sun enters Aquarius which occurs sometime between January 19th and February the 21st. New Years Day is however celebrated by most of the worlds cultures that use the 365 day Solar calendar. Although the date for the celebration of New Years Day is not the same in every culture, it is always a time for celebration and the practice of customs to help ensure good fortune in the coming new year...

COMMON NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS

The Evolution of New Years Resolutions
People dance, sing, and drink a toast to the new year ahead. Horns are blown at midnight, and people hug and kiss to begin the new year with Love and Happiness. The song, "Auld Lang Syne" is sung at midnight and this tradition is now celebrated all over the world. The ritual of fireworks began with the belief that firecrackers could be used to frighten evil spirits away for the coming year. Of course parades and processions with decorated floats and bands as well as the many football bowlgames played all over the United States are an integral part of American New Years Day Tradition in the USA. The Jewish New Year called "Rosh Hashanah", is a holy time when people think of the things they might have done wrong in the past, with the promise to do better in the future. Special services are held in synagogues, and an instrument called a Shofar, which is made from a ram's horn is played. Children are given new clothes, and New Year loaves are baked and fruit eaten to remind people of harvest time.
After all the celebrations practiced by various cultures the world over have been celebrated, people then contemplate on their New Year Resolutions focusing on goals for improving their lives in the coming new year. Many will resolve to feel better by loosing a few pounds or to quit smoking or start that exercise program and keep it going in the comming year.
Are you determined to keep your New Year's Resolutions..?
Here are a few tips for starting and keeping your own New Year Resolutions
01-Don't Try Everything at Once..!
You'll have better luck fulfilling one or two goals than you will with a long list of stuff. You can always add new resolutions as you successfully negotiate one Resolution at a time. My list is never longer than a "Top-10" and I've noticed more success with my "Top-5" lists.
02-Word your Resolutions Carefully..!
If you resolve to "Reduce Stress" try to avoid a generalization like "This year I am going to be totally stress-free." That statement in and of itself can create the kind of pressure that will add to your anxiety load quickly. A better approach might be making a "Resolution Affirmation" like: "This year I'm going to explore various ways of relaxing more completely." Give yourself some space to improve, to discover and to grow when making your list. Avoid "Resolution Statements" that sound demanding or condescending. Change is more likely to occur when you make a plan that allows you stay more loose and natural and reduces the pressure of forcing yourself to change which is the major reason many forget Resolutions altogether by the time Valentine's rolls around.
03-Write your Resolutions Out..!
Number each and word them simply, short and to the point..!
04-Post your Resolutions Up..!
Post your list up on the fridge, on the mirror or wherever your most likely to notice it on a daily basis. Reminding yourself reinforces your goals, purposes and the likelihood of your success...

Some "Common New Years Resolutions" Suggestions:
Call or write a forgotten friend...
Forget a negative memory...
Share a happy memory with someone...
Repay a debt...
Loose jealousy...
Smile at yourself in the mirror...
Help someone in need...
Perform one kind deed per day...
Give someone a compliment or word of encouragement...
Write a Poem for someone...
Spend 2-3 minutes just listening to someone...
Start a Dream Journal...
Forgive someone...
Try to understand a point of view different from your own...
Count 10 deep breaths next time you become angry...
Read or write someting positive or inspirational...
Smile at someone at least once a day...
Be quiet 5-15 minutes a day and say the "Prayer for Peace" silently or aloud...

New Years Eve has always been a time for reflection and looking back upon the past year, and more importantly, forward to the new coming year. It's a time to reflect on the changes we need to make or desire to create and resolve to follow through on making those changes.
Here are the "Top 10 New Year Resolutions" for this year:
01- Lose weight
02- Stop smoking
03- Stick to a budget
04- Save more money
05- Find a better job
06- Become more organized
07- Exercise more
08- Be more patient at work/with others
09- Eat better
10- Become a better person

Here are the "Top 10 New Year Resolutions" for the past 10 years and a brief outline of each. Any of them sound familiar..?
01- Spend More Time with Family & Friends
Recent polls conducted by General Nutrition Centers, Quicken, and others show that more than 50% of Americans vow to appreciate Loved ones and spend more time with family and friends this year. Make plans to meet up with friends for an evening of comaraderie at a favorite restaurant or take the family to the beach, park or anywhere in nature. Work doesn't always have to come first..!
02- Get Healthy, Get Fit
Regular exercise has been associated with more health benefits than anything else known to man. Studies show that it reduces the risk of some cancers, increases longevity, helps achieve and maintain weight loss, enhances mood, lowers blood pressure, and even improves arthritis. In short, exercise keeps you healthy and makes you look and feel better. Why not make this the time to start getting in shape by setting time aside each day to Walk, Swim, Run or ride a Bike..?
03- Loose Weight
Over 66% of adult Americans are considered overweight or obese by recent studies, so it is not surprising to find that weight loss is one of the most popular New Year resolutions each year. Setting reasonable goals and staying focused are the two most important factors in sticking with any weight loss program, and the key to success for all those who made their New Years commitment to lighten up the pounds this year.
04- Quit Smoking
If you have resolved to make this the year that you stop the smoking habit, then you will find many over-the-counter nicotine replacement products and therapies available to you. Even if you've tried to quit before and failed, don't let this stop you from giving it another shot. Records indicate that on average, smokers try about four times before they actually finally quit smoking sucessfully. You can look online to find a number of free support services, hotlines and smoking cessation classes to help you kick the smoking habit for good.
05- Enjoy Life More
Given the hectic, stressful lifestyles of millions of Americans, it is no wonder that "Enjoying Life More" has become one of the most popular of all New Year Resolutions. Joy not only feels good to you but to all those you come in contact with. Laughter itself now has clinical evidence that it leads to improvement in personal Health and Well Being. Consider checking out a wholistic or healing health center in your town. Treat yourself to a massage or stay at home and take a long and luxurious bubble bath. Look for those products or services you know will bring balance to your body, mind and Soul. Think about what you most enjoy doing that brings Joy to yourself and/or others and set time aside for that activity. Rent a good Movie and kick back with a Loved one or friend and enjoy your time together.
06- Quit Drinking
Many people use the New Year as an incentive to finally stop drinking, but most are not ready to make such a dramatic lifestyle change all at once. Many drinkers fail to quit cold turkey but do much better when they gradually ease of and learn to moderate their drinking habits. If you have decided that you want to stop drinking, there is ample help and support systems available. Alcoholics Anonymous offers meetings throughout the country as do a number of treatment-based programs and support groups for families of alcoholics.
07- Get Out of Debt
Was money a big source of stress in your life last year..? Join the millions of Americans who have resolved to spend this year getting a handle on their expenses and finances. Promise yourself to look at the things you buy from an "I Need" instead of an "I Want" state of mind. It's a promise that will repay itself many times over in the year ahead.
08- Learn Something New
Have you vowed to make this the year to learn something new..? Perhaps you are considering a career change, or want to learn a new language, or just want to understand how your computer works better. Whether you take a course at you're local Community College, YMCA, YWCA or read a book online or at you're Public Library or Bookshoppe, you'll find education to be one of the most motivating and satisfying of any New Year's resolutions to keep. Take a trip to you're local Museum of Art or a class in Yoga. So many healthful and exciting options are available to you this year.
09- Help Others
This is still one of the most popular and selfless of all New Year's Resolutions to make this new year. Choose to spend time helping out at the local library, tutoring a child, building something for someone, visiting an old or sick and perhaps lonely individual. There are numerous non-profit organizations to which you can volunteer that really need your help. Any of them will provide you with projects that are practical and will fit you're schedule. If volunteering isn't your thing perhaps you can find something useful to donate to you're selected charity organization. That would include donating furniture, clothing, a car and other useful household items that you no longer need yourself.
10- Get Organized
This item is practically on just about everybodies New Year Resolutions list. organization can be a very reasonable goal. Organizing your home or office can reap benefits that will last the rest of the year. Interestingly enough, folks who organize their space seem to find that their whole life feels and moves in a more orderly fashion. Reduce the clutter in your space, simplify your life and find peace in your home and in your mind...
